Bailleul 2004

Hawick Pipe Band enjoyed yet another memorable trip to their twin town of Bailleul in Northern France, and just to give you a taste of some of the goings on, here are a few photos given generously to Hawick Pipe Band by Jock McCarlie

The Carnival has taken place every Fatty Tuesday and the preceding weedend since 1853, when the Philanthropic Company of Bailleul was founded. During the Festival, a search takes place for the needy ones of the city. The Gargantua Giant chairs the festivities, seated on his float by the food and drinks, and is accompanied by his kitchen boys.

At the end of Shrove Tuesday, after the final procession of around 50 floats, with local groups, brass bands a Pipe Band and plenty of confetti, Doctor Francisco Piccolissimo tries to cure the excesses of some inhabitants in an unconventional way...in front of the town hall. And the Festival continues late into the night, in the cafés of Bailleul. Just ask this lot

The Pipers and Drummer who volunteered to play round some of the pubs of Bailleul, with diehards John Conner, Derek McGlone ,Jock McCarlie, Callum, Duncan, and Auld Eddie. I would mention the French bloke but I can't spell his name

One of the highlights of the evening was doing a stint at this particular bar. If anyone could give the name of the pub it would be greatly appreciated

Looking at this scene, you can almost tell what big Dave Carter is thinking, It's probably the same as what Darren Tench is thinking, Did Grumpy really snog that bloke with the red lippy ? You can tell he's no happy

Grant Craig Pictured left: enjoying a rest from a long hard slog through the Streets of Bailleul. As you can see it was all a bit too much for some of us. He's still no happy

Cafe de Flanders was the main watering hole for Hawick Pipe Band and it's guests. Here are just some of the friendly bar staff from this particular hostelry who made our visit one to remember
